More than 3,000 students from around the world have arrived in Dundee to take part in Freshers’ Week.
Students have been arriving in the city for events to mark the beginning of a new academic year.
Newcomers mingled in the September sunshine in City Square after being welcomed by Professor Sir Pete Downes, principal and vice-chancellor of Dundee University.

He greeted students at the Caird Hall, and spoke of his “immense pleasure” in welcoming the new students “whether they are from Dundee, elsewhere in Scotland and the UK or further afield.”
He added: “This week marks the start of a new chapter in their lives, one that will bring them into contact with inspirational mentors and peers.
“They will meet some of the finest minds in their respective fields, begin lifelong friendships, and savour a student experience that has yet again been voted the best in Scotland by students themselves.”

Dundee’s Lord Provost Bob Duncan, as well as senior academics, also attended the traditional greeting ceremony in the city centre.
The university, which this year claims the National Student Survey’s accolade as the best in Scotland, also maintains its six-year top spot in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey.
A wealth of support and activities are available for new arrivals, to help them settle into student life in the city.

Staff and student volunteers are on hand with information and even ‘free hugs’ this week.
Dundee University Students’ Association, which has been voted the best student union in Scotland and one of the best in the UK by the National Student Survey, is hosting a range of events throughout the week of festivities before studies begin.
