Teachers assured on future after closure of Menzieshill High School

Dundee’s education convener has pledged to protect the wages of principal teachers at Menzieshill High as the council attempts to find them new roles in the city.

Many teachers will move with pupils when they transfer to Harris Academy at the start of the 2017/18 school year.

A number of principal teachers will, however, have to be found new posts at other schools in the city.

Those new roles are a year in the future and the Councillor Stewart Hunter said he accepted the uncertainty has been the cause of much stress and strain.

Nonetheless, he has been working hard to ensure that the school’s staff receive as much information as possible over the next twelve months.

And he’s been keen to ensure the Menzieshill team that no-one will lose out financially as the council changes the face of education in the city.

“I met with the teachers at Menzieshill High School the day after the meeting at which the decision was taken to close the school,” Mr Hunter said.

“A number will be transferring to Harris in August 2016 with the pupils and I believe that ordinary teachers are in a good position.

“The outstanding issues surround principal teachers and we know that we will have to find them posts elsewhere.

“We have guaranteed their salaries and have been able to pledge that their salary will not change for three years to give them reassurance that they will not lose out as we try and find them new principal teacher positions.

“That is of course still a year out, but we want to ensure that we keep teachers updated of every development.

Mr Hunter added: “I have agreed to meet with the Menzieshill teachers on a regular basis as we work to get them into new posts.

“They are concerned about where their futures lie and I completely understand that.

“It has been a difficult period for them and I appreciate their professionalism.

“I am committed to working hand in hand with them and being as honest as a I can about what is happening.”
