Teenager admits causing Fife pensioner’s death through careless driving

Kieran Wylie will be sentenced next month.
Kieran Wylie will be sentenced next month.

A teenager who caused the death of a Dunfermline pensioner through careless driving has appeared in court.

Mardell Dick, 72, died in April last year when the Ford Ka she was passenger in was struck by a car being driven by Kieran Wylie on the A909 Burntisland to Kelty road.

Wylie, 19, who was 18 at the time of the accident, lost control of his car as he went round a bend, crossed on to the wrong side of the road and struck the vehicle the victim was travelling in.

The driver James Dick and another passenger were also injured in the collision near the junction with the B9157 Kirkcaldy to Dalgety Bay road.

At Dunfermline Sheriff Court Wylie, of Valley Gardens, Kirkcaldy, admitted that on April 6 last year he caused the death of Mardell Dick, of Barrie Street, Dunfermline, by driving a car without due care and attention or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road.

He admitted failing to take proper care when negotiating a bend in the road and losing control of the vehicle, causing it to cross into the opposing carriageway and collide with the car being driven by James Dick, causing extensive damage to both vehicles, causing James Dick and a female passenger to be injured and causing serious and fatal injuries to Mardell Dick.

Sheriff Craig McSherry called for reports to be prepared for November 13, when Wylie will return for sentencing.

Relatives of the deceased are expected to attend the hearing.
