A motorist in his 80s has died following a crash on a Highland Perthshire road.

Emergency services were scrambled to the A923 Dunkeld to Blairgowrie road just after 1.20pm on Friday.

It is thought the driver lost control of his vehicle on a twisty stretch of road and overturned. The car landed on its roof, blocking both carriageways.

Firefighters used hydraulic cutting gear to remove the driver from thevehicle.

The man, whose named has not yet been released, was declared dead at the scene by a GP. It is understood thepensioner was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Investigations continued for several hours last night, while traffic was diverted along the nearby A93 and A984. Police warned motorists to avoid the area.

The crash happened on a winding stretch of road close to Dunkeld and Birnam Golf Course and near the popular Loch of Lowes nature reserve.

A force spokesman said that inquiries were continuing.

One onlooker said: “This happened on a very twisty section of the A923. It was raining throughout the day, so the road would have been very wet.

“I could see the car lying on its roof with the police and fire crew working around it. The vehicle, which looked like a silver Renault, was very badlydamaged. There was a lot of debris across the road.

“The car was lying on its own and there were no other vehicles around.”

Roadblocks were set up around the scene, leading to lengthy tailbacksalong surrounding roads.

With traffic diverted away, investigators carried out a detailed examination of the scene.

A fire service spokeswoman said that two appliances from Dunkeld and Perth attended. Crews used hydraulic cutting gear to free the driver from the car.

An ambulance and a local GP also attended.

A force spokeswoman confirmed that the victim’s family had been told.

Any witnesses have been urged to get in touch with police.
