Tribute to former Perth and Kinross councillor John Mair

Former Perth and Kinross councillor John Mair has died following what his family said had been an illness “fought with fortitude”. He was 85.

Mr Mair, who represented Auchterarder and the surrounding area between 1999 and 2007, was awarded an OBE in 1986 for his years of unstinting service to local government.

Born in Glasgow in May 1929, he was educated at Glasgow Academy and Trinity College (now Glenalmond College) and undertook national service with the Royal Artillery in Malaya.

He returned to the UK to begin further education, studying at Worcester College, Oxford, and Glasgow University before embarking on a career in law.

From trainee solicitor he progressed to solicitor, partner and then consultant, all the while slipping seamlessly into a second role as a councillor.

First serving with the Corporation of the City of Glasgow, he became a councillor with Strathclyde Regional Council in 1974, eventually becoming leader of the opposition.

He retired at the 1996 local council elections, but joined Perth and Kinross Council as a member for Auchterarder in 1999, staying there until 2007.

A keen sportsman, Mr Mair retained a life-long interest in golf.

He married Casheen in September 1955 and they had three sons, William, David John and Robin and a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at Auchterarder Parish Church today at 11.30am.

Councillor Mac Roberts, leader of the Conservative Group on Perth and Kinross Council, said: “Both John and his late wife Casheen were stalwarts of the Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party for many years.”
