Young Perthshire golfing star Bradley Neil has been shortlisted for another top accolade.

Just days after he was unveiled as a contender for Young Sports Personality at the Scottish Sports Awards, the Blairgowrie teenager has been named as a finalist for the BBC’s equivalent.

The 18-year-old joins nine other up-and-coming athletes on the shortlist for the coveted award, which has previously been won by diver Tom Daley and Paralympian Ellie Simmonds.

Bradley’s father Ron told The Courier he was “very proud” of the nomination.

“This is the first time he’s ever been nominated and I’m 100% proud of him,” he said. “It’s been a bit of whirlwind for him because he’s currently in Dubai and will be heading to South Africa next month to take part in a professional tournament.

“Unfortunately he will miss both ceremonies, but he should be back home by mid-December.”

Also on the shortlist for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award are Alicia Blagg (diving), Erraid Davies (swimming), Claudia Fragapane (gymnastics), Jade Jones (taekwondo), Morgan Lake (athletics), Rebeka Simon (canoeing), Sophie Thornhill (para-cycling), Rebekah Tiler (weightlifting) and Nile Wilson (gymnastics).

A panel of experts, including sports presenter John Inverdale and Blue Peter presenter Lindsey Russell helped pick the shortlist.

They will now go on to choose the top three finalists, which will be announced live on Thursday December 11 on Blue Peter.

The winner will then be chosen by secret ballot and will be revealed during the Sports Personality of the Year event at the SSE Hydro Arena in Glasgow three days later.

Entertainment at the event will include live performances from Simple Minds, Nicola Benedetti and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, as well as highlights from the Commonwealth Games and the Ryder Cup at Gleneagles.
