Scottish Greens toast election campaign with their own craft beer

Scottish Green Party co-convener Patrick Harvie unveils his own line of beer, named 'Harvie's Hoptimistic'.

The Scottish Greens have unveiled a new election weapon – their own brand of craft beer.

Harvie’s Hoptimistic is named in honour of co-convener Patrick, who said it reflects the party’s positive attitude going into May’s vote.

Launching the beer at vegan venue Mono in Glasgow, he said: “With our hugely increased membership and some positive poll ratings, what else could we call our beer?”

Real ale fan Mr Harvie, whose head and spectacles outline graces the bottle’s green label, is hoping to be elected constituency MSP for Glasgow Kelvin at this year’s Holyrood elections.

He said: “It’s great to know that our hard-working activists will be able to finish a canvassing shift with our very own beer.”

The Greens produced their own home made campaign ale during the referendum but this time they turned to Glasgow craft beer makers Jaw Brew.

Holyrood list candidate Zara Kitson said: “As a party we have got a big youth membership and a big following among young people in Glasgow, so there is definitely an appeal to the craft ale drinkers.”

MSP hopeful Ross Greer said: “We have a lot to win or lose in the election, but the beer is just a bit of fun.

“We’ve always had a bit more fun in election campaigns than other parties.”

Harvie’s Hoptimistic Pale Ale costs around £3 and will be available at Mono and several other bars and shops in the Kelvin area.
