Filming on a long awaited adaptation of Lewis Grassic Gibbon’s Sunset Song will begin in Scotland this month.
The production, which stars Peter Mullan and former model Agyness Deyn, will film for two weeks at undisclosed locations in Aberdeenshire.
Regarded as one of the most important Scottish books of the last century, the novel tells the story of Chris Guthrie growing up in a farming family in the fictional estate of Kinraddie in the Mearns.
The feature is being directed by Terence Davies, known for his films the House of Mirth with Gillian Anderson and the Deep Blue Sea featuring Rachel Weisz.
Scenes have been shot in Luxembourg, whose film agency has contributed £1.5 million towards production costs, and in New Zealand.
Creative Scotland, the arts agency, is ploughing £450,000 into the film, the first to benefit from the lifting of the grant ceiling, which was previously £300,000.
A Creative Scotland spokeswoman said: “We are delighted to have invested in partnership with the BFI, Luxembourg Film Fund and BBC Scotland on this cultural project to realise a classic Scottish novel.
“It’s great to see an iconic and well-known Scottish story being translated to the big screen by an internationally renowned director.”
The countryside of Christchurch in New Zealand has been used to replicate harvest season in Kinraddie. Interior scenes set during the First World War are being filmed in Luxembourg.
The film’s producer, Dundee-based Bob Last, has said filming in several countries was necessary to replicate the various seasons in the book.
The production has previously been the subject of a Scottish Parliament debate raised by Angus North and Mearns MSP Nigel Don who said it was regrettable that much of the economic benefit will be felt away from Scotland.
The film is the latest in a series of productions made and inspired by Angus and the Mearns.
Dunnottar Castle near Stonehaven enjoyed a tourism boost through its association with Brave. It also served as a location for James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe earlier this year, who are acting in a new version of Frankenstein.
