Former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher is in a “critical” condition in hospital.

The 64-year-old is being treated in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, NHS Grampian said.

It could not confirm any other details about his condition.

Bernard is believed to have collapsed at a dinner at the Marcliffe Hotel in Aberdeen after a day out at an event at Banchory Golf Club on Thursday.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokeswoman confirmed an ambulance was called out to the hotel on the outskirts of Aberdeen.

She said: “I can confirm we had a 999 call to the Marcliffe at 22.13pm.

“A male patient was taken to the accident and emergency department of Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.”

Sandy Jones, chief executive of the Professional Golfers’ Association, said he was shocked to hear Bernard was in hospital.

He said: “I’ve known Bernard for a long time and he’s a close friend.

“My thoughts are with him and his family and we wish him a speedy and full recovery.”

George O’Grady, chief executive of the European Tour, said: “We are in touch with his wife Lesley and the Gallacher family and, obviously, we join with everyone in wishing Bernard a speedy recovery.”

His nephew, Stephen, who pulled out of the ISPS Handa Wales Open during the second round on Friday due to a back injury, said: “I understand that he is critical but stable. My family is in disarray at the moment and it is obviously a worrying situation. We are all anxious.”
