Cowdenbeath boss Jimmy Nicholl has seen enough of former Blackpool striker Craig Sutherland to be convinced he will score the goals that will help the Blue Brazil have a successful season, starting against Brechin City in the Petrofac Training Cup.
The former Spartans and Blackpool striker was a target of Dundee boss Paul Hartley earlier this year however, red tape surrounding his move back from college football in America saw Sutherland play the last few months of the season as an amateur for Queen’s Park.
After a trial period at Dumbarton ended, Nicholl asked Sutherland to join his Blue Brazil players and threw him straight in against St Mirren in midweek and was impressed as he scored.
Nicholl said: “Craig came in on Tuesday and went straight into a game.
“We had called him and he had thought it was just for training but we said that he was going to be playing in a game.
“He was fine with that and went out and did really well.
“I decided that he would get goals for us so we have started talking about a more permanent switch.”
Nicholl, who is well-versed on his side’s opponents, added: “Brechin have good players with plenty of experience and in particular they have terrific pace on either flank.
“They can hurt you on the wings and we have to guard against that.”
“We ended last season on a real high by defeating Dunfermline 3-0 in the play-off final.
“That was a great day and created a lot of positivity at this club.
“We want build onthat starting against Brechin.”
Cowden will be without Lewis Milne due to suspension, with Dean Brett struggling to be fit due to a hamstring problem.
