Dundee v Falkirk: Davidson determined to snuff out Bairns’ challenge

Iain Davidson has been lauded for showing leadership qualities for Dundee but he insists he is more interested in promotion than praise.

Davidson’s determination and distribution from midfield seemed to pull the Dark Blues up the park when they hosted Queen of the South on Tuesday night.

He also scored what turned out to be the winning goal to keep the Dens men a point ahead of Championship title rivals Hamilton Accies.

It was a dominant display that quite rightly earned plaudits from manager Paul Hartley, who also stated that he sees him more as a midfielder than a central defender.

Davidson will be operating from the centre of the park again today when Falkirk are the visitors and a repeat performance would have his gaffer singing his praises again.

However, he insists the only thing he is interested in is the team getting back up to the Premiership.

“I was just working hard for the team,” said Davidson, whose header proved to be the difference between the sides.

“It was a rarity for me, scoring a goal like that, so it was a really nice feeling.

“I was delighted to put that one away, especially as it turned out to be the winner. Hopefully, I can chip in with a few more between now and the end of the season.

“The main thing for me, though, was that it helped the team pick up three vital points.

“It is not about individuals and all I was hoping for was a victory over a tough Queen of the South side.

“They finished the first half strongly but I tried to drive the lads forward after the break and it worked. We had momentum, more intensity and played at a higher tempo and were deserved winners in the end.”

The third-placed Bairns sit nine points behind Dundee with only six games remaining.

It would require a remarkable collapse by the Dark Blues and Hamilton to let them back in the race but Davidson knows they will still pose a danger this afternoon.

“As long as we keep winning that’s what matters,” he said.

“We know the task in front of us and six wins gets us the league. It’s easier said than done, though.

“We now have a tough game against Falkirk and they will still feel they can have a big say in the title race.

“They are a few points behind us but they are a good side and dangerous opponents.

“We haven’t beaten them this season so that’s another incentive for us to go out and win.”

When Davidson and his mates walked off Dens on Tuesday, they thought they had moved three points clear at the top only to discover Accies had scored an injury-time winner against Raith Rovers to keep the gap at one.

The Lanarkshire men are at Cowdenbeath today but Davidson won’t be asking for score updates from Central Park.

“All you can do is concentrate on your own game,” he said.

“The way I see it, you can’t influence results elsewhere so you shouldn’t worry about them.”
