Peter MacDonald’s cool finish could be the start of a memorable season for Dundee

Peter MacDonald.
Peter MacDonald.

Dundee goal hero Peter MacDonald is being backed to play a crucial role in a successful season for the Dark Blues.

The Dens men got their first Premiership victory of the campaign a 1-0 away success over St Mirren thanks to a wonderful strike from MacDonald with just 10 minutes left.

It wasn’t so much the composed finish that caught the eye, although that was a cracker.

Rather, what impressed everyone watching was the first touch from Peaso that not only got the high ball from Thomas Konrad under control but also pushed it in front of himself in one smooth movement.

It was a lovely bit of skill and now teammate Gary Irvine sees no reason why both the striker and the club can’t go on to have great seasons.

“Peaso has proven over several years how good a finisher he is,” said Irvine. “To see him get the winner was brilliant and shows he can still cut it at this level.

“His first touch was something special and what a goal it was to win a game,” added Irvine.

“It was a clearance, the ball was coming out of the sky and spinning so to take it down with that touch deserved a goal.

“I suppose he does have a point to prove having had injuries before, but he looks after himself.

“The bottom line is, if he is coming off the bench and scoring a goal like that then he is a real credit to himself.

“Knowing him as I do and for as long as I have, he will want more than being on the bench.

“If you get a chance you have to take it. He has done that with that goal and it will give the manager food for thought now for our next match against Raith Rovers in the League Cup.”

Dundee are likely to make a few changes for Tuesday night’s tie at Dens.

Simon Ferry’s name was on the teamsheet for the St Mirren clash but he broke down in the warm-up and remains a doubt.

The man who replaced him in the starting line-up, Kevin McBride, took some heavy treatment from the St Mirren players and was replaced by Iain Davidson after 65 minutes.

Manager Paul Hartley said: “We know we have to use the full squad.

“Ferry had a collision in training on Friday and we gave him to the last minute to make it but he felt it again.

“McBride has an ongoing problem with his groin so we will have to look at that with Tuesday night in mind.

“We will make changes, that’s for sure.”
