Phil Roberts told he is not part of Dundee’s plans

Phil Roberts has been unable to make the breakthrough at Dundee.
Phil Roberts has been unable to make the breakthrough at Dundee.

Dundee have told winger Phil Roberts he is free to find another club.

The former Falkirk player was signed by manager Paul Hartley on a two-year deal last summer but was sent out on loan to Alloa in February.

He has been back training with the Dark Blues first-team squad but had not featured at all in games this season.

Now, he has been told he is surplus to requirements.

Hartley said: “Phil is no longer part of our plans.

“I just think it hasn’t worked out for him. There is no doubt he has talent but there is much more to being a footballer than just talent.

“It hasn’t worked out for him, plain and simple. He is not part of our plans and the way we work.”

Dundee will look to bounce back following Tuesday night’s disappointing League Cup defeat at Dunfermline when they face Inverness at Dens tomorrow in the Premiership.

They will have to do so without influential midfielder Gary Harkins who is suspended following his red card picked up at Aberdeen last week when he was adjudged to have brought down Adam Rooney in the Dundee penalty area.

However, there should be a welcome return from injury for two others.

Hartley said: “Kevin Thomson and Nicky Low are fine and trained today.

“They should be OK for Saturday.

“Julen (Etxabeguren) hurt his hamstring against Dunfermline and will probably be out for a couple of weeks.

“Rory Loy is probably looking at the Partick Thistle game. His groin problem was a grade two.

“Luka Tankulic has tweaked his ankle it has been an ongoing problem for about a month.

“Simon Ferry hurt his back but he will probably train tomorrow.

“Gary Harkins though is suspended. Jeebsy didn’t think there had been much contact at the time but when you look at the incident, it is still a penalty.

“So I didn’t think there was any point in appealing it.

“Thankfully, Kevin and Nicky will be back which will help us.”

Hartley is determined that Dundee will put their midweek defeat behind them when they take on an Inverness side still looking for their first win of the season.

He said: “We are all disappointed about the result on Tuesday.

“There is not a lot we can do about it now. We have spoken about it and looked back at the game.

“We wanted a good cup run but we have missed out this time.

“It was a hard one to take.

“I went up to watch Inverness last midweek and they still have good players.

“They have a few injuries but they play in the proper manner and they will be desperate to get that first result of the season.

“They have had a lot of injuries and at times they have not even been able to fill their bench.

“However, they play exciting football and they are still a talented group.

“The lad Ryan Christie is an exciting prospect and he is one we have to pay close attention to.

“We know we are in for a tough game on Saturday but we want to head into the international break on the back of a good result. If we get that, there is a chance we could get into the top four.”
