Dundee United boss Mixu Paatelainen happy to play on plastic

Dundee United boss Mixu Paatelainen has revealed he is a fan of the modern artificial pitch.

The Finn will take his team to Hamilton to play on Accies’ synthetic surface today and he thinks they can thrive on the plastic at New Douglas Park.

Paateleinen said: “I think it will help us because we want to keep the ball on the deck and knock it around.

“So, absolutely, I think it will be good for us.

“My personal opinion is that you have a better quality match playing on the latest artificial pitches than you do on a really soggy, muddy grass pitch.

“There are quite a few poor surfaces already in the Premiership and that is something we need to look at.

“We are all in it together and want to improve the standard of Scottish football but you can’t do that if you are playing on poor pitches.

“So it’s very important.

“I don’t have anything against the latest Astroturf ones as long as they are maintained regularly.

“If they are brushed regularly and the rubber is spread evenly over the pitch then it’s fine.

“If they are in lumps and it’s not taken care of then it becomes a problem but if they’re well maintained then it’s not a problem at all.

“I think it’s a bit of a myth in people’s minds because we remember the old carpet Astros you used to get.

“I played on them and they were horrible, nowhere near good enough.

“They were horrendous, slippery and dangerous.

“But the difference now with the technology and the improvements – it’s incredible.”
