Gavin Gunning hints at possible stay at Dundee United

Gavin Gunning has speculated that the cup final may not be his last appearance in a United jersey.

The Irish defender’s Tannadice contract ends in the summer and he is widely expected to move on, with Rangers boss Ally McCoist having gone public with his interest in him.

After helping Jackie McNamara’ men knock his possible future employers out of the cup on Saturday, however, Gunning was adamant that his future may still lie with the Tangerines.

Asked if he was expecting the May 17 match at Celtic Park to be his final one for the club, Gunning replied: “I don’t know about that.

“I will just keep playing until the end of the season and see what happens in the summer. I am still in talks with United but I have been leaving it all to my agent.

“You never know what will happen around the corner in football. I have loved my time here and the manager has been great since he has come in. He is a young guy who has the team playing some good football.

“When we are on our game we are hard for any team to deal with. I want to win a final now and hopefully it is not going to be my last game for Dundee United.

“Hopefully, I will be here next season. If it is to be my last then it’s a great one to end on. You don’t often get the chance to win the cup.

“This is a massive chance for us now and we want to take it.”

Meanwhile, Gunning revelead that he was warmly congratulated by his compatriot and former Tannadice teammate Jon Daly after the Ibrox clash.

Daly will, of course, forever be remembered for the part he played in helping United lift the trophy in 2010 but he spent Saturday in light blue trying, unsuccessfully, to score against his old team.

“I know Jon well and he is a great guy who has done so much for United in the past,” said Gunning.

“He said to me: ‘Good luck, congratulations, well done.’

“He would obviously have liked to have been in the final himself so he was a bit gutted but it was a nice gesture from him.”
