Dunfermline v Annan: Pars are closing in on new striker

Dunfermline manager Jim Jefferies is optimistic of having a new striker signed up in time for their League Cup encounter with Annan Athletic.

The Pars boss has run the rule over the mystery marksman in recent days and is keen to strike a deal as he bids to beef up his attacking options for the season ahead.

Jefferies recruited Ayr United top scorer Michael Moffat during the close-season but failed in an attempt to lure Kenny McKay from Annan as he sought to add a target man to his squad.

However, the experienced former Hearts and Kilmarnock manager is hopeful he has now found a player who fits the style he has been looking for.

He said: “We’re closer, very close, to getting a striker in. Nothing’s agreed but we’ll take it to the next stage now and see what it would take for us to sign him.

“It’s a player we’ve had a look at. A trial would be the wrong word, but I’ve seen enough and I’ll have to back my judgment a wee bit on this one.

“I’ve not got a lot of time to hang about because the boy’s got offers elsewhere.

“We could get something done before the game on Saturday but that doesn’t mean to say he’ll play, because he’s been training but he’s not quite up to speed in terms of fitness.”

Dunfermline suffered a frustrating false start to the new competitive campaign when their Petrofac Training Cup clash with rivals Raith Rovers was postponed on Saturday.

The tie was called off after a freak storm engulfed East End Park and left the surface unplayable.

After a pre-season light on friendlies, Jefferies is confident his players will not prove to be undercooked in their preparations when they finally get the action under way tomorrow but expects a tough game.

“Annan did well last season and just missed out in the play-offs, so they’ll be no mugs,” he said.
