Montrose have appointed Dundee United legend Paul Hegarty as their new manager.

The Angus outfit parted company with former boss George Shields after Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to East Fife with the Gable Endies currently sitting second bottom of League Two.

Now, they have turned to Hegarty, who has previous management experience at Forfar, Aberdeen, United and Livingston.

Ironically, he also recently had a stint coaching with East Fife.

Lee Wilkie has stepped down as Montrose assistant manager and Hegarty has brought in his former Dundee United team-mate John Holt to replace him.

Gable Endies chairman Derek Sim said: “Montrose Football Club are delighted to announce the appointment of Paul Hegarty as our new team manager who, in addition, has appointed John Holt as assistant manager following Lee Wilkie’s decision to stand aside.

“Paul and John have agreed contracts to the end of the season.

“Paul has a great stature in the game, brings a high level of management and coaching experience, a great knowledge of the game plus an enthusiasm which can only assist in the coming weeks of ensuring the club climbs the league.

“John Holt had a very distinguished football career and returns to Montrose having had a brief spell as manager in 1993/94.

“We welcome both to Links Park.

“Montrose FC also wish to thank Lee Wilkie for all his efforts and offer him best wishes for the future.”
