Losing runs end for Dundee Stars and Fife Flyers

Ned Lukacevic kept his cool last night to slot a game-winning penalty shot and snap Fife Flyers’ depressing losing run.

The Montenegro-born left-winger, who was drafted by National Hockey League cracks the Los Angeles Kings in 2004, was the only one of six penalty shot takers to count in the nerve-wracking shootout.

Earlier, Fife powered to a 4-0 lead, Bobby Chaumont opening their account after four minutes and Matt Reber following up eight minutes later.

Chaumont hit the rigging again just over a minute after that and Lukacevic increased their advantage 14 minutes after that.

Riley Emerson pulled one back 10 minutes later when Edinburgh had a man advantage on a power play. Rene Jarolin made it 4-2 only 52 seconds after the start of the final session.

Scott Fleming dented Capitals comeback by finding the net seven minutes later to make the scoreline 5-2.

But never-say-die Capitals claimed three goals inside the final 10 minutes to take the game into sudden death overtime.

Defenceman Marcel Petran found the net on the power play after 51 minutes with Jade Portwood scoring again six minutes later to reduce the deficit further.

Petran levelled at 5-5 with 101 seconds remaining but it was Fife who emerged with two points after the shootout.

Lukacevic kept his cool to net for the Flyers while team-mates Chaumont and Jamie Milam missed.

Dennis Rix, Greg Collins and Portwood missed for the home side, who lost for the first time in six matches.

Meanwhile, Shane Lust slotted home in sudden death overtime last night to snap a four-game losing run for Dundee Stars.

The Canadian-born former Braehead Clan hit-man counted 1min 29sec into the extra period to finally kill off Hull Stingrays.

The strike came as a welcome relief for the Tayside team who have had a nightmare start to the season.

It came despite Hull fighting back from a 1-0 deficit.

Debutant Timo Kuuluvainen broke the deadlock after being set up by Dumfries-born Bari McKenzie after 34 minutes.

Carl Lauzon levelled 20 seconds later to take the game into the extra session and 28-year-old Lust counted with Kevin Quick involved in the build-up.

Braehead Clan battled back from 4-0 down to earn a point after Neil Trimm levelled at 5-5 with less than two minutes left of regulation time at Cardiff Devils.

Defenceman Andrew Hotham scored 21 seconds into sudden death overtime to deny the Scots and secure a 6-5 victory for the Welsh side.
