Rugby round-up: Race for BT Caledonia Division 1 title is hotting up

The race for the BT Caledonia Division 1 rugby title gathered pace with the top quartet all posting wins on Saturday.

Glenrothes maintained their challenge with a 22-21 win away to Mackie Academy.

Michael Byers scored the only try of the first half as the Fifers reached the break 9-5 adrift.

Shaun Gray kicked a penalty than add the conversion after Cammy Goodall touched down, although the hosts responded in kind for a 21-15 lead.

However, Stewart Hainey crossed for a try and Gray’s conversion gave the visitors a single point lead which saw them home after Mackie missed a last ditch penalty.

Morgan Academy suffered a 53-7 defeat away to Caithness.

In Division 2 (Midlands) Harris Academy lost 11-0 at home to Carnoustie.

The win moves Carnoustie into second place behind Alloa who had few problems in seeing off Howe of Fife seconds 66-0.

A 26-5 win for Kinross at home to Stirling University leaves them fourth, one place ahead of Madras Rugby, 45-0 winners at home to Panmure, who share the bottom rung of the league table with a Blairgowrie side beaten 38-14 at home to Grangemouth Stags.

In Division 3 (Midlands East) Kirkcaldy II chalked up a 45-29 win at home to Waid Academy.

Strathmore II secured a 26-22 win over Stobswell at Downfield, while Falkirk II were 45-13 winners at home to Fife Southern.

Crieff & Strathearn moved up to fourth place in the Division 3 (Midlands West) with an 81-0 win over Alloa II at the Braidhaugh in the only match that went ahead.
