A high-tech firm manufacturing components for the space and defence sectors is cutting 15 staff at its Dundee factory as part of an efficiency drive.

The streamlining at Trak Microwave Europe on Dunsinane Industrial Estate was announced to surprised workers during at an unscheduled meeting on Monday morning.

Trak last night confirmed that it was making the job cuts through a combination of voluntary and compulsory means.

A spokesman said a total of 15 jobs were going from a total workforce of more than 80.

Trak part of Smiths Interconnect, which itself is a subsidiary of London-quoted technology firm Smiths Group has had a presence in Dundee for more than 40 years.

The firm designs and produces a range of components for use in high-tech systems including defence and air traffic control radars, radio base-stations and satellites.

The company’s latest financial year came to a close at the end of last month but the most recent accounts available at Companies House cover the 12-month period up to July 31, 2013.

They show the firm generated a pre-tax profit of £589,000 in the year, down from £964,000 booked in 2012, despite revenues increasing by almost £3.1 million to £12.38m.

Trak’s Dundee site managing director Alan McNeill said in his report to the accounts, which were signed off in February, that “global financial upheaval” was effecting the company, but the size of the impact was dependent on the sector.

He said the commercial market was showing signs of continued recovery while defence spend had continued to decline.

The company spokesman last night said that the job cuts were regrettable but had come about as a result of fluctuations in work volumes at the factory.
