Dunnottar Castle has seen a 16% surge in visitors, much of which is being attributed to the Brave effect.

National tourism agency VisitScotland predicts Oscar-winning Disney-Pixar adventure Brave will generate more than £120 million of business for Scotland by 2016.

The quango said joint marketing activity alongside Disney had reached hundreds of millions of prospective tourists worldwide and a study had shown that thousands intended to visit Scotland after being inspired by the film.

Several attractions reported visitor increases this summer, with Brave said to be the main reason behind a rise in popularity.

Dunnottar Castle by Stonehaven, which served as inspiration for the film’s Dunbroch Castle, saw numbers climb by 16%.

Visitor attractions associated with the film and hotels included within a special nine-day Disney adventure tour, including the Kingsmill Hotel in Inverness, the Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh and the Cuillen Hills Hotel on the Isle of Skye, have also been cashing in on the film.

VisitScotland chairman Mike Cantlay said: “This is just the beginning of how VisitScotland plans to maximize on Brave. I genuinely anticipate Scottish tourism benefiting from this movie well into the 2020s.”

The study found the film was “well on its way” towards delivering the £140m additional spend target set by VisitScotland during what it sees as a 10-year campaign.
