Hollywood star Brian Cox hopes the beleaguered Whitehall Theatre in Dundee can be saved.

Brian Cox, star of The Bourne Supremacy, Troy and a host of other blockbusters, has stated his sadness at the plight of the Whitehall Theatre after its operating company went into liquidation.

Whitehall Theatre (Dundee) Ltd, the charitable company charged with the day-to-day running of the venue, was forced to stop operating leaving a question mark over the future of the auditorium.

Although the building’s owners have claimed that shows could be back on within weeks, the situation has created uncertainty as to whether scheduled shows will take place.

Mr Cox, who is from the city and is rector of Dundee University, told The Courier he hoped a resolution could be found.

In a statement, he said: “I am really sad at the loss of any theatre, and considering Whitehall’s record as touring house (touring venues are important), I am hoping other possibilities can be looked into.”

The famous actor is the latest figure to show his support to the theatre since The Courier revealed its difficulties on Monday.

While the uncertainty continues, an assurance was offered to those who have booked tickets for forthcoming shows.

An online statement (link), posted on behalf of staff, read: “Whitehall Theatre is going through some very well advertised changes.

“The staff at the theatre send their apologies for this inconvenience and rest assured all ticket monies are ringfenced and will not be touched other than to refund patrons in some cases.”
