Blether: Six penalties in a game against the same team? Is Davy Gow spot on?

Post Thumbnail

You don’t get penalty-kicks in every game of football – and to get two over the 90 minutes would generally be a talking point.

But six? And all for the same team?

That’s the subject of the latest tale from Davy Gow, a regular reader and contributor to this column.

“In season 1965-66, I had just left Butterburn Youth Club and had signed for Broughty Athletic juniors,” said Davy, who stays in the Lilybank area of Dundee.

“One of our early games was against Lochee Harp, a game refereed by the late Davy McHardy.

“Harp conceded six penalties in the game and Broughty won 9-3.

“I tell people this tale and they usually ask how many players were sent off?

“I can honestly say I don’t think there was any.

Davy Gow is in this East Craigie Junior FC photo from December 1972. Back row (from left) – J Smart (linesman), Palmer, Robb, Beatson, Gow, Brown, Davidson, Robertson. Front row – Briggs, Morris, Murphy, McDonald, Pate, Strachan.

“I remember Tommy Clink playing at centre-half for Harp that day.

“Do you have any record of this game to confirm all this?”

Unfortunately, we don’t have a record of this encounter.

However, I reckon, like Davy, anyone who played in the game certainly wouldn’t have forgotten the event.

If you can add anything further, get in touch.

Meanwhile, Iain Birnie recently appealed for assistance in gathering information on a team called Victoria FC.

Our June 30 edition carried that appeal by the Broughty United Youth coach.

Iain’s grandad William Birnie also featured in the story.

Rob Boag, from Canada, sent in this response.

“There was a Birnie (don’t have a first name,) who played left-half and was honoured with a Scottish Junior cap for Scotland v England in 1931.

“This player Birnie played for a team called Arklays at that time, who were in the Dundee Welfare League.

“However, Arklays entered the Scottish Junior Cup competition.”

He continued: “The only mention I can find on Victoria FC was a Dundee side named Victoria Foundry (I believe the foundry was in the Clepington Road area).

“They played against Violet in the first round of the Scottish Junior Cup in the 1924-25 season.”

Our  June 30 edition featured a tale regarding John Bourke’s walk-out from Dundee United.

Reader Derek Dickemann responded: “I remember a game at Rugby Park at the start of possibly the 1981-82 season.

“This player John Bourke was highlighted in the match-day programme as a former United player, but I had never heard of him before.

“Ralph Milne scored an equaliser from the spot after Dundee United had been 1-0 down at half-time.”

He continued: “I also remember seeing the Killie players wives in the home stand.

“All of them had fur coats on, I recall.

“This was the only time I have been to Rugby Park, but was taken by how affluent the area was, bungalows and the like.”
