BLETHER: Broughty want to find two wayward stars

Broughty United Amateur Football Club in Dundee is a proud institution and has produced many fine footballers over the years.

Most of these players don’t go away after hanging up their boots and usually stay in touch with the club in one way or another.

That could be in a coaching or official capacity or just supporting events.

One such event happened last year when the club teamed up with Broughty YMCA to help celebrate the latter’s anniversary.

The sportsman’s dinner went down very well and also managed to raise funds for both clubs.

Former player Jackie Knight, who assists at fund-raising events, is currently organising another dinner.

This takes place at the Woodlands Hotel on Saturday, March 11, 2017, with guests asked to arrive at 6.30pm.

Jackie said: “The event last year was such a success that we had to have another reasonably soon.

“It was great to see so many old club-mates at the dinner.

“There were also many more who were keen to attend but couldn’t on that particular date for one reason or another. Hopefully, they will make it this time.”

Jackie continued with a plea: “When I was getting in touch with former players and officials about the previous event, two remained unticked on my list. They were Billy Shaw and John Murray.

“They played for Broughty United from around 1969 to 1973, and it seems no-one knows of their whereabouts. We have just lost all contact with them and thought that Blether with Brown is the ideal medium to put out a plea for information on the duo.

“We would really like to know where they are now and what they are doing.”

If any BwB reader knows anything about Billy and John, then get in touch with me or phone Jackie on the number below.

Speakers at the dinner are Dundee-based former international referee Bob Valentine and former Forfar Athletic goalkeeper Davie Nicoll.

Tickets for the dinner cost £35 and can be obtained from Jackie (01382 774683) or Stuart Farquharson (01382 532624).
