Blether with Brown: Paulies picture is a mystery

Following a recent Tele article on Hilltown couple Hugh and Sheila Lynch, Tele features writer Stewart Ross received this photo (left), which is slightly damaged at the right-hand side.

Hugh (85) and Sheila (86) got a card from The Queen as they have just recently celebrated their Diamond wedding anniversary (60 years).

They also had a special visit from Lord Provost Bob Duncan, who brought flowers and a card.

An unknown reader sent Stewart a photo of the St Peter’s & St Paul football team in 1947.

Hugh, an avid Dundee United fan, is in the team and is pictured second from left in the middle row.

However, there were no more names or details, and the sender remained anonymous.

Stewart then passed the photo on to me.

Can anyone supply any more details and stories about this particular team?

In his article, Stewart wrote that Hugh was born in long-gone Walton Street and moved to Beechwood in 1938.

Sheila’s home was in Cookie’s Close, just a few yards from where the couple live today.

A plasterer all his days, Hugh was called up for National Service in 1951 and spent three years in the Royal Air Force. He served across the UK.

He was also a keen footballer in his younger days.

Sheila first worked at the age of 14 in 1942 and was a chocolate packer at Keiller’s factory.

The couple met at a country dance in St Mary’s Forebank and married at St Peter’s and St Paul’s in 1956.

They have four children — Pauline, Billy, Jack and Veronica — and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
