Blether with Brown: No bigheads at Lochee United

Former Lochee United player Dave Bruce responded to the two photographs sent in by John Wright, which featured action from a Lochee United v St Joseph’s encounter at Thomson Park in the 1960s.

There were no names with the photos but Dave soon rectified that.

“The photograph featured Willie Caswell and, I think, John Robertson in goal,” said Dave, who came through the Butterburn Youth Club ranks and had a stint with Dundee FC before joining the Bluebells.

“The other photograph looked like Lochee’s Ally Mitchell but I didn’t recognise the Joeys players.

“During my last season at Butterburn, I was asked to play a trial game for Lochee United.

“It was against St Joseph’s. I played at No 8, which was the inside-right position and would nowadays be right midfield. I was lucky enough to score four goals and, as you can imagine, I was delighted.”

Dave, who worked for many years in the licensed trade, continued: “After the game and still on a high the legendary Davie Mitchell reminded me I was to become a Lochee player next season. However, he also said that, although I did well and scored four, I would not get a game up front because we had good players there and I would stand more chance of playing in defence.

“So, no chance of getting big-headed at Thomson Park. I hate to admit it but he was right.”
