Leven Bay Cafe, Leven

Leven Bay Cafe, Leven

What is it?

Takeaway and café in the coastal town of Leven in Fife.

First impressions?

You have to negotiate the café by walking through the takeaway area which would be quite tricky with a pushchair. The café itself was clean and decorated with a vague seaside feel going on mixed with rustic wooden tables and chairs but there was a distinct lack of natural light which made the whole experience a bit gloomy.

What did you have?

Dad had the double egg supper (£4.90), Mum had the smoked sausage supper at £5 and the young ‘un asked for the single mini fish (£5.90). With extra pickles, a roll and butter and drinks, the total came to just under £25.

Much of a wait?

The drinks arrived soon after ordering while the food took around 15 minutes to come but we’d expected a bit of a wait as it’s cooked from scratch.

How was the food?

The eggs in the double egg supper were nice and runny but were let down by the chips which were rather limp and pallid and could have done with another few minutes in the fryer. This criticism applied to the smoked sausage supper too – the sausage was very tasty but let down by the chips. The mini fish was fresh and succulent but the batter was slightly too greasy.

Good for children?

There’s not much room for negotiating pushchairs and the atmosphere isn’t really conducive for wee ones although the waitress was very friendly, helpful and chatty.

Good for the rest of the family?

The menu offers pretty standard chippie fare and unfortunately it didn’t really have anything to make it really stand out from the crowd. It’s a long-established shop that obviously relies on local trade but as Leven is on the up, thanks to its proximity to Edinburgh, the café could perhaps also up its game to attract tourists and other passing trade. It’s only a short walk to Leven’s rather nice beach, and the shops are a stone’s throw away.

Would you go back?

Only if we knew the chips had had a bit of a makeover! The owner should also capitalise on the seaside theme and make more of it to cheer up the rather dreary interior.
