Infiniti ‘diesel killer’

This is the new Infiniti QX50, a mid-size SUV from the luxury brand of Nissan.

Making its debut at the LA Motor Show, the most intriguing thing about the QX50 is its revolutionary new petrol engine.

The new 2.0 litre four cylinder unit is capable of changing its compression ratio on the fly by adjusting the pistons’ stroke, producing efficiency or power.

Infiniti claims that it could improve overall efficiency by 35 per cent compared to the old QX50 V6 –giving diesel economy in a petrol unit. It also has plenty of power, with 268bhp on tap.

In addition to its fancy new engine, the 2019 QX50 also marks Infiniti’s first use of Nissan’s ProPilot semi-autonomous system. Propilot takes control of the accelerator, brakes and steering to keep the car in a single lane moving with the flow of traffic. The technology looks set to trickle down to the Nissan Leaf and other more affordable cars.

There’s no word yet on price for the QX50 but it should go on sale early in the new year.
