Local thug who attacked woman with glass tumbler sent to jail

A thug who inflicted serious head injuries on a woman after smashing a glass on her head has been jailed for 10 months.

Mark Davidson, 33, struck Claire Milne after he had a 12-hour drinking session, then told police she had assaulted him.

He was jailed at Dundee Sheriff Court after admitting leaving her with a permanent scar after assaulting her at her home at Rossie Woods following an argument in the early hours of May 1 last year.

Fiscal depute Joanne Smith told the court the couple had been drinking for several hours on April 30 after she picked him up from the Royal Arch pub in Montrose shortly before 10pm when she finished work at the local leisure centre.

She said Davidson had been drinking from around 3pm that day and after arriving at her home, they shared a takeaway and a bottle of vodka.

At 3.37am on May 1 the accused made a 999 call to the police saying he had been assaulted and was being harassed by a drunk woman and he named the complainer.

The fiscal added: “A female voice could be heard shouting in the background. On the advice of the operator, the accused agreed to leave the house and wait for the police outside. The accused got up to leave still holding a glass tumbler from which he had been drinking.

“The complainer also rose and the accused struck her to the left side of her forehead while holding a glass tumbler, causing it to shatter.”

Ms Milne called a friend who phoned an ambulance and also contacted her mother.

When Ms Milne’s mother arrived at her daughter’s home, she found her bleeding from her head, her clothes covered in blood and blood pooling on the floor. She was described as being hysterical.

Police traced the accused in the grounds of Rossie Young Persons Trust, about 400 yards from Ms Milne’s home.

He told police the complainer had thrown a glass at him.

Ms Milne was taken to Ninewells where she was treated for a two-inch gash on the left side of her forehead.

There were fragments of glass still lodged in the wound and an area of skin was hanging down over her left eye. The injury was stitched by staff who told her it would leave a permanent scar.
