A Kirriemuir man has been left with just a single set of clothes after a blaze tore through his home.
The fire ripped through John Taylor’s house in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
It hospitalised him along with his partner Lorna Ogilvie, 36.
The 40-year-old joiner said: “I went to bed and I was woken up with the alarms going off. I went through to the kids’ bedroom and it was completely on fire.
“If they had been there then they wouldn’t have made it. It was so intense and the heat was unbelievable.
“I was hoping that it would be confined to one room but the smoke has destroyed everything.
“All I have left is one set of clothes that I got in the hospital.”
John’s room, along with the bedroom of his three children – Ben, seven, Sarah, six, and Matthew, four – was completely destroyed by the blaze.
John said the possessions destroyed in the blaze were “priceless”.
He explained: “Their beds and smart TV have been destroyed. There is nothing left at all.
“Everything is gone — we have nothing now.”
The fire service was alerted to the incident in Kirriemuir’s Prosen Road at 1.44am and dispatched two appliances to the scene. The blaze broke out in a bedroom in the flat and residents in the block had to be evacuated.
Residents spoke of seeing a man who was completely black from smoke fleeing from the burning flat.
A fundraiser has been set up by John’s niece Kelsea Naismith, 19, to help the family get back on their feet.
