Dundee brothers jailed after leading police on high-speed chase over Tay Road Bridge

Two brothers who led police on an early-morning, high-speed chase over the Tay Road Bridge have been jailed.

Robert Fleming, 23, and brother Steven, 22, were pursued by police after Robert was caught trying to steal a motorbike from a street in Gauldry, Fife.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard that during a subsequent chase the pair tried to get away from police in a car driven by Robert Fleming – despite him being disqualified.

Robert Fleming was caught by a neighbour trying to steal the motorbike from an address on Main Road, Gauldry, but fled.

After being notified of his car’s details, police spotted him driving on the A914 Balmullo to Newport road.

Depute fiscal Laura Bruce said: “They made off over the Tay Road Bridge, along Broughty Ferry Road and were at East Dock Street at around 5.30am.

“Police were pursuing with lights flashing. The car was driving at excessive speeds between 50mph and 60mph through red lights and into the opposite carriageway and into oncoming traffic.”

The pursuit stopped after police believed it was unsafe to continue the chase in the built-up area.

Robert Fleming, of Happyhillock Road, admitted stealing £53 of fuel from the BP filling station on Kingsway West, stealing a vehicle from Main Road, Gauldry, driving dangerously, at excessive speed and while disqualified on the A914 Balmullo to Newport road, Broughty Ferry Road and elsewhere on June 11.

Steven Fleming, of Hilltown Court, admitted separate charges of driving while disqualified and with no insurance on April 18 in Derwent Avenue, Gillburn Road, Forfar Road and Hilltown.

Robert Fleming was jailed for 275 days and disqualified from driving for 30 months. Steven Fleming received 180 days in prison, consecutive to a current sentence, and a two–year ban.
