Portable classrooms are to be introduced at St John’s RC High School in Dundee in an effort to provide improved services for youngsters with complex needs.

Dundee City Council believes that the move will “improve learning experiences” and boost available teaching and storage space.

It is the second time in a matter of weeks that the council has announced the use of portable classrooms as the solution to overcrowding.

Opposition councillors questioned their introduction at Claypotts Castle Primary, but officials said the modern units were a far cry from the ageing huts many parents be familiar with from their own days at school.

The latest proposal is designed to solve space problems the schools enhanced provision hub.

With 37 young people currently attending the hub at St John’s, and numbers expected to rise, the portable classrooms are seen as the best possible solution.

It will also solve problems being experienced by the music department, providing additional space for music tuition and storage of instruments.

Five double classroom units are already in use for the decent of Harris Academy and one of these could be retained for St John’s.

Children and families service convener, Councillor Stewart Hunter, said: “This is a sensible and cost–effective solution to issues like learning space, storage and bathrooms.

“This will help enhance the learning experience at St John’s High School for a number of young people and will enhance inclusivity at the secondary.

“A number of options have been carefully considered and this one provides the best value for money and least disruption to the school.

“We carefully monitor the capacities of all our schools and the issues that emerge in these buildings.

“I am pleased that we are putting forward a sensible proposal that will help pupils to make the most of their time at the school.”
