Staff members stop thief running off with cash from Dundee butcher shop

Martin Blake, 45, of Byron Street, admitted stealing cash from a butcher’s shop in Hilltown.

Blake admitted that on January 20, at Yorkes of Dundee, in Strathmartine Road, he stole a quantity of money, while out on bail.

Blake was seen on CCTV to take the money — amounting to £90 — which was the shop’s “float” and was situated on a chair in the premises near the end of the day’s trading, the sheriff court heard.

The money was fully recovered and police arrested Blake a short time afterwards.

Solicitor Anika Jethwa told the court that it was an opportunist theft by Blake.

She said: “The float money was sitting on a chair and he took it.

“He was stopped by two members of staff.”

Ms Jethwa told the court that while Blake had an “appalling” record, his rate of offending had slowed down considerably while he was in a five-year relationship. However, the relationship had broken down two weeks before and he was very distressed by that.

She said: “He had taken alcohol and he’s not used to drinking.”

Sheriff Alison McKay deferred sentence until February 21 for reports and a restriction of liberty order assessment.

The sheriff granted Blake bail in the meantime.
