‘Woman said she had been raped in Dundee’s Baxter Park’

A dog walker has told of the moment he met a woman in Baxter Park who asked for help, saying she had been raped.

Gigi Ciriblan, 37, is standing trial accused of carrying out a series of sex attacks in Dundee over an eight-day period.

One charge states he raped a woman at Baxter Park on August 22 last year after forcing her to the ground.

The High Court in Dunfermline heard from local man Gordon Melville 58, who was walking his dog through the park that same evening.

The witness said he came across a woman who said she needed help finding her phone.

He said: “It was dark but I always take a torch with me.

“I did notice someone loitering around and about the intersection area as I flashed my torch down the path.

“It was a female. I moved closer towards her with the torch. As I approached her, the dog started barking, so I started moving away.”

But before he could, the woman started speaking to him. He said: “She said to me she had lost her phone and asked if I would help her look for it.

“I said ‘where have you lost it?’ She said ‘in the bushes’.

“I said to her I wasn’t willing to follow her into the bushes area. I was very wary of what could have happened.

“At that time the dog was getting fairly agitated so my main concern was to move away from the area.”

Asked by advocate depute Stephen McCloy how she reacted, Mr Melville replied: “She was quite abusive. There was a fair amount of insult.”

Mr McCloy asked if she said anything else. Mr Melville said: “She shouted ‘You wouldn’t even help a lassie that has been raped’.

“I looked around to see if there was anyone in the park to add any credence to what she was saying.

“As I walked further, her statement made me feel uncomfortable.”

But Mr Melville said he didn’t feel the woman was “overly distressed” and he didn’t feel there was anything about her appearance that made him want to query it further.

Ciriblan is facing six charges of a sexual nature and another of assault which are said to have been carried out in Dundee over an eight-day period in August last year.

He denies all the charges and the trial continues.
