Boy, 16, took dad’s car to go to Dundee Asda

A 16-year-old male took and drove his dad’s car without permission because he “wanted to go to Asda”.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard the youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was stopped by traffic police for speeding.

When officers asked him to produce his licence he told them he did not have one as he was only 16 years old.

Fiscal Depute Bill Kermode told the court the youth was a first offender.

The fiscal said: “At 8.20pm, on June 11, police officers were carrying out speed checks on Harestane Road.

“They became aware of a Volkswagen Passat being driven at 35mph – which is 5mph over the speed limit in the area.

“The vehicle was stopped and the accused, who was driving the vehicle at the time, was asked to produce his licence.

“He said he didn’t have one as he was only 16.”

He then told police it was his dad’s car and his dad did not know he had taken it.

Solicitor Paul Parker Smith, defending, said: “His father had fallen asleep and he wanted to go to Asda, so he took the keys to his father’s car and drove off.”

The youth admitted one charge of taking a driving away a car without permission or lawful authority, from a property in Dundee, on June 11.

He also admitted a further two charges of driving without a licence and driving without insurance, on the same date and location.

Sentence was deferred until October 14.
