Dundee man admits on-pitch assault during football match

A 25-year-old man assaulted another player during a football match at a Dundee park.

Dundee Sheriff Court heard Jason Stewart punched Robert Thomson, leaving him dazed and confused after the pair jostled at a corner late in the game.

The incident took place at Dawson Park in Broughty Ferry on October 11 last year.

Stewart, of Ballantrae Road, was playing for Tayside Fire Brigade although he is not a member of the Fire Service and Mr Thomson was playing for Broughty United.

Fiscal Depute Kirsten Thomson said: “They became involved in an argument and the game was stopped and the referee told them to stop.

“The accused then moved behind the referee and the match continued as the referee thought the argument was over.

“The referee then turned and saw the accused punch the complainer, causing him to fall down in a seated position.”

While Stewart was give a red card, a physiotherapist tended to Mr Thomson and he then continued to play.

The fiscal continued: “After the match had finished the complainer appeared dazed and confused and an ambulance was called.

“When paramedics arrived they treated a cut to his face and he was taken to Ninewells Hospital for further treatment.”

Police were also contacted and Stewart was cautioned and charged.

Stewart admitted the assault in court today.

Sheriff Janys Scott QC said: “This is your fourth conviction for assault in ten years, which means I have to take a serious view.

“It is also a blow to the head, which is dangerous – people can have all sorts of injuries as a result of that.”

Stewart was fined £670.
