Drug addict jailed after assaulting and robbing 70-year-old in his own home

Olborski was brought from custody to Dunfermline Sheriff Court for his anti-Scottish rant.
Olborski was brought from custody to Dunfermline Sheriff Court for his anti-Scottish rant.

A disabled Rosyth pensioner was viciously assaulted and robbed by a complete stranger in his own home.

The OAP was punched to the floor and had more than £1,600 stolen.

The attack was carried out by drug addict Steven Maltman who got into the house with another man after lying to the OAP that he wanted to buy tobacco.

Maltman, 35, of Anderson Street, Kirkcaldy, admitted assaulting him and robbing him of two wallets, a sum of money and a quantity of tobacco on September 20 2017

Depute Azrah Yousaf said the victim needed a walking stick and has a heart complaint and emphysema.

“He’s well known locally for selling tobacco,” he added.

Dunfermline Sheriff Court heard the 70 year-old victim was taken to hospital suffering from bruising to his nose, eyes, arm and tail bone.

Defence solicitor Ian Beatson said Maltman was homeless at that time having been released from custody from a previous sentence.

“He has had a long-term heroin addiction and has little recollection of this incident,” he said.

“He says he doesn’t know how he knew of this man or where he lived.”

Sheriff Charles MacNair said: “This was an assault and robbery on a man who suffers from disabilities and was committed in his own home where he is entitled to feel secure.”

The court was told Maltman is currently in prison for possession of a knife and shoplifting. His earliest release date is March next year.

Sheriff MacNair imposed a new jail sentence to start then for 40 months and two weeks.
