The dining hall at a Perth primary school is to be transformed to become the venue for an atmospheric African-themed charity dinner.

The dinner on June 11 will be served to parents, rather than pupils, by Jean Beveridge, head cook at Craigclowan Preparatory School, assisted by two guest chefs, Jenny Thomson and Dave Cashman.

The event is the latest in a series of fundraising activities which three Craigclowan teachers have been undertaking ahead of embarking on a challenge of a lifetime when they climb Kilimanjaro in July.

The trio of teachers who have been training hard in preparation for the 19,341 feet ascent of the highest mountain in Africa are Gillian Whitelaw, Tracey Cashman and Fiona Grant. Unfortunately Gillian has had to withdraw from the climb due to a knee injury but she is continuing to assist her two colleagues with fundraising and moral support.

The teachers, who are funding all their trip costs themselves, have so far raised more than £8,000 of their target £10,000 which will go to Radio Tay’s Cash for Kids and The Mark Taylor Educational Trust.

Craigclowan head cook Jean Beveridge and her team normally serve the 250 pupils at the school a healthy lunch each day, using local ingredients, but the charity dinner will be a sumptuous dinner with an African twist.

Among those to offer their best wishes to the intrepid trio when he visited Perth was BBC Masterchef: The Professionals winner Jamie Scott, who wished them every success with their final weeks of training and the dinner which will be served to parents, family and friends of the school.
