Chicken Balmoral and all the trimmings: Christmas behind bars

Perth Prison.
Perth Prison.

Inmates in Perth Prison and Castle Huntly Open Prison tucked into food including halal lorne sausage and mushroom brie, hazelnut and cranberry Wellington this Christmas.

The menus, which were released following a Freedom of Information request, reveal that prisoners at both establishments had extensive breakfast, lunch and dinner menus to choose from for Christmas Day — and it will be much the same for New Year’s Day.

Inmates at HMP Perth had the breakfast choice of either black pudding, link sausage, bacon, potato scone and beans or two halal lorne sausages, one veg sausage, potato scones and beans. Alternatively they could select a veg haggis, two veg sausages, potato scones and beans on Christmas Day.

For their Christmas lunch, the same prisoners had the choice of soup and a roll, followed by a chicken fillet, with stuffing and gravy, potato croquettes, sprouts and gravy or a quorn garlic and mushroom bake. The sweet provided was a Christmas pudding served with custard or apple pie.

Inmates at the Castle Huntly open prison were also given healthy options on Christmas Day, including a ‘brunch’ of semi-skilled milk, fruit juice, quorn sausage and a roll or toast served with low fat spread, for breakfast.

Their lunch menu consisted of soup, followed by Chicken Balmoral and trimmings or mushroom brie, hazelnut and cranberry Wellington or halal curry. Castle Huntly inmates then had the choice of Christmas pudding served with cream or fresh fruit for a sweet.

Menus for New Year’s Day are much the same, with the traditional steak pie on offer at both prisons. Alternatively, those housed at Castle Huntly can choose a Wexford cheddar cheese tart or a halal curry, with a  sweet on offer of sticky toffee ice cream.

Prisoners in Perth have a similar New Year’s Day menu with the addition of choosing a vegetable Kiev and then a fruit trifle.
