The Perth Film Society will mark Holocaust Memorial Day with a rare screening of a highly acclaimed drama set in the Auchwitz concentration camp.
Son of Saul, which features in most critics’ best-of-2016 lists, will be shown at Perth Concert Hall on Thursday, January 26.
A society spokeswoman said: “The movie won the Grand Prix award at Cannes and the best foreign film at the 2016 Oscars.
“In finding morsels of humanity rescued from unspeakable hell, the movie has taken its rightful place in the debate concerning cinema and the Holocaust.”
Holocaust Memorial Day was established to remember the millions who suffered and perished during the war. The day is held each year on January 27, the anniversary of the liberation of Auchwitz.
Son of Saul is set in late 1944 and tells the story of Saul Auslander, a member of the Sonderkommando – a small group of camp inmates who are given some privileges in return for helping the Nazi’s widespread extermination.
The film is directed by Hungarian architect László Rajk and stars 48-year-old actor and poet Géza Röhrig. It was shot in Budafok, Budapest.
