Schools in Perth and Kinross, Fife and Angus will remain closed on Thursday due to freezing winter weather.

A red warning has been issued by the Met Office for Tayside and Fife as the “Beast from the East” moves into the UK from Russia. The alert will be in effect from 3pm on Wednesday until 10am on Thursday.

Angus Council has confirmed 17 schools will stay shut due to concerns around the conditions, which could bring more than 1ft of snow to Courier Country overnight. No school transport will run in the region on Thursday.

The following Angus Council primary schools will be closed: Aberlemno, Airlie, Arbirlot, Birkhill, Carmyllie, Eassie, Inverarity, Isla, Letham, Mattocks, Monikie, Murroes, Newbigging, Newtyle, Strathmartine, Tannadice and Tealing primary schools.

The local authority said it will be “monitoring” the situation into the evening.

Fife Council said all of its schools will remain closed on Thursday.

Perth and Kinross Council has also confirmed that all of its schools will be closed on Thursday.

A spokeswoman for the local authority said: “On the basis of the most recent information advice received from the Scottish Government, updates from public transport providers, and the unpredictability of severity and location of weather, all schools in Perth and Kinross will be closed to pupils tomorrow (March 1).”

As it did on Tuesday, Dundee City Council is not announcing any closures in advance. It says it will provide an update “as early as possible” on Thursday.
