Free milkshakes were on offer from The Venue in Perth on the day of the Conservative hustings event.

A bar which handed out free milkshakes to coincide with the arrival of Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt in Perth on Friday has received death threats and homophobic abuse over the stunt.

The Venue put out the offer for free milkshakes “to be enjoyed sensibley” on the day the Prime Minister hopefuls arrived for their hustings.

A spokesperson for The Venue said the friendly atmosphere at their bar on the day made them “proud” to live in the Fair City.

The spokesperson said: “We had a great crowd in from all walks of life and political persuasions – and even a few tourists as well.

“We could not have asked for a more pleasant family atmosphere.

“The debate from those living in the area has been civilised and friendly, making me so proud to say I live here.”

However The Venue also claimed that they had received abuse online over their giveaway, mostly from people living outside of Perth.

The spokesperson said: “Comments have ranged from death threats, promise over violence towards staff and even some nasty homophobic rants.

“Most of these comments have been made from people who don’t even live anywhere near Perth.

“For those silly sausages insisting we were on the rampage to spark public disorder, you should perhaps be looking into your own behaviour.

“With the event in planning for the last two days, it was of upmost importance that absolutely nobody was in danger of our milk.”

The bar also raised over £200 for YMCA and CATH.
