BLETHER: Manchester City’s Denis Law ‘never’ hit six against Luton Town

Andy Walker responded to the recent query regarding Denis Law’s six-goal haul against Luton in 1961.

Said Andy: “Not one to court controversy, I have to say that Denis Law NEVER scored six goals against Luton Town while playing for Manchester City in the FA Cup.

“He actually scored just five — and was ‘credited’ with another.

“The Kenilworth Road ground was a quagmire and the match was eventually abandoned as the pitch was waterlogged.

“In a goalmouth melee on a pitch that resembled a tattie field, four players scrambled for the ball. Denis, running in, collided with the goalkeeper. The ball spilled out but Denis went for it again, only this time he had to get past a Luton defender.

“Law leapt and, as he did so, the Luton goalie tipped the ball sideways towards his team-mate Foines, who stretched to connect with the ball. It hit the Luton man on the back of the calf and rolled over the line, just as Denis landed.

“Now, who got the last touch of the ball?

“In the absence then of TV replays, the press attending couldn’t make it out, and a radio broadcaster likewise.

Andy concluded: “However, it is a great story. Denis has been quite open about it, too, and he has suggested himself the defender might have scored an own goal.”

Incredibly, Luton won the replayed tie 3-1.
