Defender Paul Quinn’s stay at Dundee United could become permanent — if manager Ray McKinnon can shuffle his squad.
Former Ross County man Quinn has been training with the Tangerines since their pre-season work kicked off.
Initially that was simply as a favour to the 31-year-old to allow him to get fit as he searches for new employment after leaving the Staggies at the end of last season.
His work, though, has impressed the manager and he turned in a solid display as a trialist when United opened their pre-season build-up with a 3-0 win at Montrose on Tuesday night.
Quinn could be in action again today when United face Blackpool in a closed-door friendly.
And, if he does well again, he may be offered the chance to sign up for the season.
Any deal, though, may hinge on players leaving. That could make Coll Donaldson a key man.
The former Livingston and QPR man would be allowed to leave if he could get fixed up elsewhere, though right now there is no indication of that happening imminently.
Earlier this year he was close to a move to Poland and top-flight outfit Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza, with whom he impressed on trial.
But that deal fell through when the Poles moved the goalposts and asked for a loan deal after originally indicating they wanted him as a permanent signing.
Trialist goalkeeper Deniz Mehmet could be involved again today.
The former West Ham kid, who also has experience of top-team action with Kayserispor, Falkirk and Port Vale, is likely to get at least part of the game.
Meanwhile, United’s chances of landing former Hibs and Aberdeen man Fraser Fyvie now look slim.
He was expected to sign up last week but it didn’t happen and the ex-Scotland U/21 international has also held talks with tomorrow’s opponents Blackpool.
Midfielder Scott Fraser is in full training after the broken bone in his foot that severely curtailed his involvement in the final couple of months of last season.
After sustaining the injury in March, the 22-year-old was only able to make two brief substitute appearances in the play-off games against Falkirk and Hamilton Accies.
He, though, looks on course to be ready for the start of the season.
