Coach Burger quits Dundee United after just two months

First team coach Werner Burger has left Dundee United just over two months after being appointed.

The 60-year-old has returned home to Germany with the Tangerines citing medical reasons as being behind his expected departure.

Burger, long-time number two to Csaba Laszlo dating back to their time together at Hearts a decade ago, said in a club statement that he had decided to quit because at the current time he could not give his full attention to his Tannadice role.

“I would like to wish Dundee United the very best for the future and have been encouraged as I have seen the squad strengthened through recent weeks with the addition of some good players,” he said.

“Reluctantly, I have decided to return to Germany, and as it is impossible for me to give the 100% at this moment, I wanted to be honest with the manager and this great club.

“I leave expecting the team to have a very successful season.”

His good friend and boss has expressed his disappointment, but stressed Burger leaves Tannadice on good terms.

“While I will be sorry to see Werner leave, I admire his honesty and professionalism in making this difficult decision.

“I know how keen he is for us to deliver success.

“Everyone at the club wishes him well for the future.”

With Laurie Ellis as assistant manager and Neil Alexander goalkeeping coach, it could be that United will not move to replace Burger.
