Csaba Laszlo has been impressed by some of the kids on Dundee United’s books.
But the Tangerines boss wants to protect them by adding more experience to his squad in the January transfer window.
The last few weeks have seen United hit by injuries to experienced players like Willo Flood, Stewart Murdoch, James Keatings, William Edjenguele and now Fraser Fyvie.
The last two on that list are facing lengthy absences — Edjenguele with a broken bone in his foot and Fyvie because of a damaged knee.
And while Csaba has faith in the youngsters waiting in the wings, he wants to ease the pressure on them by bringing more-seasoned campaigners for the crucial final months of the season.
“We have to look at the bench. Scott Allardice has been injured. He is a good footballer but this is a 20-year-old boy and he needs time to get back,” explained Csaba.
“Matty Smith, Logan Chalmers — they are promising players but they are young and you can’t wait for them to change the game.
“I am happy with Logan. He only plays five minutes (on Saturday) but he comes in and he showed he wanted the ball — this is what you have to do.
“Matty Smith also does OK when he comes on but I need players from the bench who can change the game dynamic. Ones too push a little bit more.
“We are looking for some new players with quality because we must be very careful to look that we get the balance.
“The league is very long, this is like a marathon and you see then how the injuries come.”
After making the bench last weekend following his recovery from a dislocated shoulder, skipper Flood is set to start tomorrow’s televised top-of-the-table clash at St Mirren.
Murdoch could also be back in the frame after a hip problem suffered in training a couple of weeks back.
“It is good news that Willo Flood was on the bench and was ready,” added Csaba.
“It is very important Murdoch is training with us for this week and he could be ready.
“If we can bring those boys back they will help us, not just with the numbers but with the quality as well.”
Advanced tickets for the away end tomorrow have all been sold but there will be cash turnstiles in operation.
