Dundee United players have learned lessons from Easter Road hammering

Dundee United manager Ray McKinnon is confident his players have learned from the hammering they took from Hibs at Easter Road.

That 3-0 defeat on January 6 was one to send shivers up the spines of the Tangerines and their fans as they were swept aside by Neil Lennon’s men, who completely dominated the match and could have won by even more goals.

The teams go head to head again at Tannadice tomorrow in what the home side will be hoping is a fabulous Friday rather than another fright night.

There are reasons to be cheerful for United.

They are unbeaten in all competitions at their own stadium this season, including a memorable 1-0 victory over the Hibees back in early December.

Also, Hibs have not won in the league since January 29 – a stretch that includes three draws as well as last week’s shock loss to basement boys St Mirren.

So it’s a case of positive thinking for McKinnon and his men as they prepare for their biggest game of the season.

The United manager said: “I just think we weren’t at our best in January when we lost 3-0 to Hibs.

“We were sloppy and got punished for that.

“Also, the first two goals were avoidable and then we were up against it.

“However, I would say that we have learned from that.

“We know we need to be sharper.

“I think everyone gets periods in the season when they have their blips and we have had ours.

“It’s part and parcel of football across the world.

“We are just delighted to still be in it and if we get a victory then it’s game on.”

United’s home record is extremely impressive: 12 wins, four draws and no defeats.

McKinnon added: “I think the boys enjoy playing at Tannadice and it’s great we are unbeaten there this season.

“That’s an excellent record and something of which we are proud.

“The fans have been superb there, too.

“It’s been difficult at times because of the way teams have set themselves up to play against us but I don’t see Hibs sitting back.

“So it should be a good, open game.

“Hopefully by the end of this match we are still unbeaten.

“There is still a huge amount to play for this season for both clubs .

“You can dress it up whichever way you like but we want to win every game and that includes this one against Hibs.”

Meanwhile, United are continuing to monitor trialist Wato Kuate.

The Cameroon-born Portuguese defendive midfielder played in a development  game against Hibs at Forfar on Tuesday, which was watched by McKinnon.

The United boss added: “We will probably keep him here for another wee period and see how he does.

“I would say he has done OK so far.”
