Davina McCall was among the viewers who said a new documentary charting the late Jade Goody’s troubled life and rise to fame was heartbreaking to watch.

The presenter – who was the host of Big Brother when Goody was a contestant – posted a broken-hearted emoji on Twitter as Channel 4’s Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain aired on Wednesday.

“Wow… this is really intense… she lived a lot in her short life,” McCall said of the star, who died in 2009 after being diagnosed with cervical cancer.

She has previously urged fans to tune in, saying the programme was “heartbreaking, shocking, uplifting, and full of nostalgia”.

The documentary told of Goody’s difficult background with parents who used drugs, and documented her journey to becoming a housemate on the 2002 series of Big Brother.

It also looked at how she became something of a hate figure and was mocked by some members of the media.

Many viewers said they were in tears watching the programme.

One person posted on Twitter: “Jade Goody show is heartbreaking, yes she had her flaws but she is probably still THE most real reality star there’s ever been #JadeGoody.”

Another said: “@Channel4 well done for showing the Jade Goody programme.

“Been in tears but also laughter watching tonight. What an honest soul, with the most infectious laugh and beautiful smile.

“Heartbreaking to watch.”

“I’m literally in floods of tears watching #jadegoody she was actually such an amazing girl I never realised the life she had,” said another.

“Laughing, crying and reminiscing whilst watching Jade Goody – you’ve got to love her,” said another.

Jade: The Reality Star Who Changed Britain continues next Wednesday August 14.
