The harsh reality of fire in the home was shown to shoppers in Perth, Blairgowrie, Pitlochry and Arboath last week as part of a two-week tour across Tayside.
The contents of a burnt-out living room were put on display at the St John’s Shopping Centre to show just how devastating a blaze can be.
In light of recent fires across Scotland, which have resulted with six people losing their lives, the public is being urged to ensure homes are properly protected and to take extra care.
During the initiative, fire crews will be on hand to provide safety advice and passers-by will also be encouraged to sign up for a free home fire safety visit.
Tayside Fire and Rescue community safety manager Martin Tait said, “We are delighted to support the fire safety roadshow.”
He continued, “We’ll be looking to provide advice and support to those in our communities who are most at risk and would encourage all residents within Tayside to get in touch to arrange a home fire safety visit.Quick and free”It’s free, quick and helps reduce the risk of fire devastating your home and your life.”
During 2008-09, there were 569 house fires in Tayside and two fatalities, while a further 81 people were hurt or injured.
Over the same period, a total of 6705 house fires occurred in Scotland, resulting in 54 deaths and more than 1400 injuries.
It was revealed that more than one-third of these properties did not have a smoke alarm installed.
Next week the firefighters will visit Tesco and Asda supermarkets in Forfar and Dundee, as well as the Wellgate Centre in Dundee.
