Kilmannan Dales dominate at NPS Summer Show

supreme ridden champions at strathallan: Kilmannan Black Magic and Richard Telford
supreme ridden champions at strathallan: Kilmannan Black Magic and Richard Telford

Supreme of the working hunter ponies at the NPS Summer Show at Strathallan Castle, Perthshire, was Kirsty Aird with the intermediate champion Tillyochie Tom.

The start of the show was delayed by half an hour as horseboxes were getting stuck at the showfield entrance due to the heavy overnight rain.

The ground dried out quickly in the morning with the baking sun; however the heavens opened at lunchtime with torrential rain and water lay in all the rings.

This was only their third show together since arriving at Kirsty’s Glenrothes-based yard last month. They’ve been successful on their other outings, being champion at Richmond and Central and West Fife Show.

“It was a lovely pony and jumped correctly during the very heavy rain. It coped well with the ground and they were a joy to watch,” said judges Madge Taylor and Robert Parker-Jones.

The 10-year-old grey Connemara gelding is owned by Miss Alex Henderson from Caithness, and is by Glencarrig Prince and out of Castlegrange Sparrow Hill.

Reserve supreme was Dundee University student Becca Macmillan with the open champion, Coathamdene Just Dylan. Becca and her consistent Welsh section C gelding were champion at the Royal Highland in 2013, they also competed a 50km endurance ride recently and hunt with the Lauderdale.

Richard Telford had a successful day with Bill Ireland’s home-bred Dales ponies Kilmannan Robert the Bruce and Kilmannan Black Magic scooping two supreme titles.

Robert the Bruce went through the in-hand card; firstly lifting the breed championship, the Strathblane trophy for the best bred by exhibitor, the NPS silver medal championship, the May de Warrenne-Rogers Memorial Trophy for the best English breed then the overall supreme sash, judged by Sheila Clark.

“It was hard to judge the two ponies I picked for the champion and reserve as they are both so different but both very nice. It’s a tremendous mover and really goes,” said Sheila.

Robert the Bruce, a nine-year-old stallion is by the HOYS stallion Village Defender and out of the Olympia champion Kilmannan Black Pearl. He qualified for HOYS at the Derbyshire Festival the previous week and also for the Cuddy supreme in-hand championship the previous year after winning at the Royal Highland.

The reserve was Jill Cousens with the hunter pony champion Kenilwood Windbourne, a three-year-old by Mynach Orion and out of her home-bred mare Rustums Whispering Wind.

Reserve in the May de Warrenne-Rogers Memorial Trophy for the best English breed was Gwen Rae’s home-bred Fell two-year-old colt Nicholwalls Black Jack, recently reserve supreme at Ayr Show.

The part-bred in-hand title and riding pony silver medal championship went to Clare Chisman’s home-bred three-year-old filly Tylo Hot Like Me. By Deanhills Royal Portrait, the filly is by the former RIHS ridden pony Rosedale Glamour Puss.

Overall supreme of the ridden ponies was the open champion, Kilmannan Black Magic, ridden by Richard Telford for owner and breeder Bill Ireland.

The 11-year-old Black Magic was gelded last year and hunts with the Berwickshire.

Reserve supreme ridden was the intermediate champion, Andrea Hodgson with Old Mill Mid Day. The seven-year-old Connemara gelding also won the novice working hunter championship.

Andrea is producing the pony for her son Hayden to ride next year in flat and working hunter classes.

By Robe Thunder, the Irish-bred pony has been unbeaten in every worker class this year and has qualified for the Picton final.

Open and intermediate reserve was Eastlands Rashiebrae, a six-year-old Connemara mare, owned and bred by Diana and John Staveley and ridden by Emma-Jane Murray.

Rebecca Green won the mini Heritage championship with the lead rein winner Gwynrhosyn Demelza, an eight-year-old mare by Waxwing Hurricane. They qualified for the RIHS at the NPS Spring Show.
